This four-piece contemporary ensemble take a meticulous approach to composition and performance, creating a sound much greater than their parts (accordion, mandolin, acoustic guitar and violin) would suggest. Their music is sweeping, majestic and cinematic; marking them out as kindred spirits with Steve Reich, Michael Nyman and the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. It's a unified but never uniform sound, one made by four virtuosic musicians pulling in the same direction and keen to provoke an emotional response in anyone within earshot. Band On The Wall, Quaytickets, UK Tue, 23rd March 2010 - Tue, 23rd March 2010 From £12.50*Perhaps the greatest exponents of folktronica, Tunng's seething, swirling mix of real instrumentation underscored with a torrent of electronic samples, glitched psychedelic tracking and angelic singing puts them light years ahead of other artists in the genre. Add to this the fact they can write fantastic observational and darkly bucolic lyrics, and you have one of more interesting and cerebal bands performing live today. Following last year's tour with members of Tuareg desert blues band Tinariwen, their visit to Band on the Wall comes on the back of their eagerly-awaited new album And Then We Saw Land.
