Adrian Edmondson & The Bad Shepherds Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama, Quaytickets, UK Sat, 9th October 2010 - Sat, 9th October 2010 From £15.00*Adrian Edmondson and The Bad Shepherds play punk songs on folk instruments. Not as a gag, but because they really like the noise. They think the songs are better than people remember. They love folk instruments. It works. They do songs by The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Stranglers, The Jam, Sham 69, The Undertones, The Ramones, The Buzzcocks, The Specials, Talking Heads, Squeeze and others, even Kraftwerk! Alright, they're not all punk, but they come from roughly the same era. They've mostly given the songs a kind of Celtic feel, and they've stuck in the odd reel and jig here and there. But occassionally they just thrash! They've always thought the excitement of a reel taking off is the nearest thing to the excitement of watching punk live in the 70's. ADRIAN EDMONDSON (Vocals, ‘thrash mandolin’) Ade is best known as a comedian in The Young Ones, Bottom, and The Comic Strip Presents. Though he’s no stranger to the music world having played the Monsters of Rock and Reading Festivals with Bad News, the Hootenanny with Jools Holland, Hyde Park with The Who, and he’s toured with The Bonzo Dog Doo-dah Band. He’s also had a No 1 single with Cliff Richard! And as a director he made lots of music videos in the 80’s for the likes of The Pogues, Squeeze, Elvis Costello and 10,000 Maniacs. TROY DONOCKLEY (Uillean pipes, cittern, whistles, vocals) Troy has built up a formidable reputation as both a Composer/Arranger/ Musician/Performer and as a leading virtuoso of the Uilleann Pipes. He’s released three critically acclaimed so...

With Soft Cell, the first successful British electro-duo in partnership with Dave Ball, Marc achieved a string of international hits - biggest of all, their version of northern soul classic Tainted Love, while Memorabilia is cited as the first techno record ever. 10 million-plus worldwide record sales later, Soft Cell are a British icon, influencing several subsequent generations of musicians - from Pulp, The Pet Shop Boys and Suede, to Goldfrapp and onto Antony Hegarty of Antony & The Johnsons fame. Stardom Road was the first album recorded since his near-fatal accident. With one exception, it’s an album of covers, chosen and sequenced to tell Almond’s story. It resembles not just an album but a play, which clearly suits a man who comes alive on stage, whose songs have always resembled dramas, whether they are underpinned by fizzy synth-pop, 60s-inspired pop kitsch-arama, bare-naked acoustic ballads or orchestrated splendour....

Murcof & Francesco Tristano Band On The Wall, Quaytickets, UK Mon, 15th November 2010 - Mon, 15th November 2010 From £12.50*An atmospheric and intuitive cross-genre collaboration between Mexican electronic composer Murcof and classical pianist Francesco Tristano. An ongoing project initiated in 2007 from their shared base in Barcelona, and now gathering new momentum with the preparation of a debut album, we are delighted to welcome them to Band on the Wall for what promises to be a thrilling concert. The two musicians come to this collaboration from contrasting but complimentary perspectives – Murcof as a highly influential electronic producer who releases on The Leaf Label and has drawn inspiration from baroque and 20th century art music performing a triumphant concert at last year's Futuresonic Festival in Manchester; Francesco as one of classical music's rising stars, a pianist who has repeatedly sought encounters outside the concert hall, performing with dance legends Carl Craig and Moritz von Oswald, and forming his band Aufgang. The collaboration starts at the meeting point between these two worlds, and explores the common ground and tensions between them. The performance is a unique and moving blend of acoustic improvisation and electronic processing that feels entirely integrated. Francesco's deft touches seem to evolve freely, splashing the sound field with chromatic colour and propulsive percussive textures, and intermingle with Murcof's monolithic drones, heavy sub-bass and veiled melodies. There is a sense of brooding melancholy and limitlessness that absorbs the listener, touching on themes of life, death and eternity. This seated concert ...
