A typical scuttle was a ‘seething mass of sixty lads fighting with sticks, stones and belts’. As the lava cooled rapidly, contraction occurred. While contraction in the vertical direction reduced the flow thickness (without fracturing), horizontal contraction could only be accommodated by cracking throughout the flow. The extensive fracture network produced the distinctive columns seen today. The basalts were originally part of a great volcanic plateau called the Thulean Plateau which formed during the Paleogene period. A chance to explore the secret Wartime tunnels at Dover Castle. Dover Castle has recently spent 2 million in renovating the Great Tower which has only just recently re-opened. The Great Tower takes you back to the medieval court of King Henry II who built the tower to showcase his power and wealth. You can also experience what life was like for soldiers stationed at the castle during WWII with a guided tour of the Secret Wartime Tunnels. Other essential viewing at the castle includes the Medieval Underground Works, the Port War Signal Station and Admiralty Lookout, used in both World Wars and now refurbished.
