The Downliners Sect Eel Pie Club, Twickenham Wed, 17th February 2010 - Wed, 17th February 2010 From £10.00*The Eel Pie Club will play host to cult heroes, The Downliners Sect, who inspired the likes of David Bowie, Van Morrison, Bob Geldof and Thee Headcoats. Contemporaries of the Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds, The Downliners Sect were formed by deerstalker hatted rhythm guitarist, Don Craine, in 1963. Their brash and exciting brand of Richmond Rhythm and Blues soon gained them residency at both Eel Pie Island, on The Thames at Twickenham, and at Londonís Studio 51 Club, where they recorded their first EP, ëA Nite in Great Newport Streetí, now a rare collectorsí item. They still attract crowds of thousands in Japan and Sweden, where their songs, Little Egypt and 'I Got Mine' both reached No. 2 in the Hit Parade (The Beatles Rock n Roll Music and The Rolling Stones Satisfaction were in the Number 1 spots at the time), and recently appeared at The Gold Coast Casino, just off the Strip in Las Vegas. The Sect consists of original members, Don Craine (rhythm guitar/vocals) and Keith Grant (vocals/bass), together with Paul Martin (harmonica/saxophone), Del Dwyer (lead guitar) and Alan Brooks (drums). In recent months, The Downliners Sect has recorded a new album, played live on Mark Lamarrís† Gods Jukebox, toured Sweden and headlined at festivals in Spain and Italy, and, nearer home, the Crypt Stage at the Ealing Blues Festival and Madame Jo Joís in Soho.
