Belshazzar's Feast Royal Albert Hall, London Thu, 1st November 2007 - Thu, 1st November 2007 From £5.00*As the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra 2007 – 08 season commences we are pleased to announce a festival of music which embraces the rich and diverse range of works from the English repertoire. Ian Maclay, Managing Director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra says: “It is a wonderful and unique opportunity for the Orchestra to perform our Green and Pleasant Land series across three major London venues. The concerts cover a vast range of English repertoire incapsulating some of the greatest English works ever written”. Holst - The Planets Suite Walton - Belshazzar’s Feast Two undisputed masterpieces of twentieth century English music are presented in this concert, starting with Holst’s celebrated Planets Suite. From the thundering war-music of Mars to the haunting wordless chorus of the Neptune finale, the score contains some of Holst’s most inspired and effective music. Walton’s vision of Belshazzar’s Feast lifts one to even greater heights, perhaps, with its stereophonic brass bands and massive choral writing. Sir Thomas Allen takes the demanding baritone role, recounting the terrifying tale of the ‘writing on the wall’, and the work’s closing pages remain one of the most thrilling finales in all music. Conductor - Leonard Slatkin Baritone - Sir Thomas Allen London Symphony Chorus Brighton Festival Chorus
