Shadowlands Wyndhams Theatre, London Tue, 16th October 2007 - Sat, 15th December 2007 From £24.25*"Why love if losing hurts so much? The pain now is part of the happiness then. That’s the deal" Charles Dance stars in this first major revival of the acclaimed Shadowlands by William Nicholson. This intensely, moving play charts the extraordinary true love story between C.S. Lewis and Joy Gresham, played by award-winning actress Janie Dee. Famous in his day as a scholar and a broadcaster, he is perhaps best known today as the author of the classic books The Chronicles of Narnia. A confirmed bachelor into his fifties, he met and married this remarkable American woman, known for her outspoken views and acerbic wit, and their astonishing story has become a testament to the unpredictable nature of love and its enduring legacy. Winner of the Evening Standard Play of the Year and nominated for Olivier and Tony Awards, Shadowlands went on to win BAFTA film of the year. Charles Dance is one of the country’s best-loved actors and has been involved with some of the most exciting film and television productions over the last thirty years including Robert Altman’s Gosford Park, Michael Collins, White Mischief, Jewel in the Crown and most recently Bleak House. He wrote and directed the acclaimed Ladies in Lavender. Olivier award winning actress Janie Dee is one of our most accomplished stage actors whose work includes seasons at both the National Theatre and RSC and extensive work in the West End and on tour nationally. They are joined by a company including John Standing, Richard Durden and Graham Padden. "A beautiful and touching play .. a joy to the end" Daily Express "Strongly comic throughout" The Times "Engrossing and entertaining, well crafted and brilliant" New York Post
